The Frisky Gypsys – Ocean
Steven Hamilton and his band of merry rogues return with stirring new single.
Make no mistake, the Frisky Gypsys are ready to explode out of the gates once this pandemic is over. Before the world was put on hold this Wexford based four-piece had toured extensively around the Uk, Europe, and the USA, as well as establishing themselves as a staple act on the festival circuit. When all your hard work is abruptly halted, a band is left with a difficult decision. Do we drop all and wait it out, or do we use this time to come up with something special?
It was an easy decision for Frisky Gypsys frontman Steven Hamilton, who capitalised on the downtime to great effect. He poured himself into his songwriting to come up with a collection of tracks which represent all the highs and lows of his life experience. Add to the mix the unmistakable chemistry and energy of his bandmates and we had a recipe for something really memorable. That something was the ‘Dream Big’ Ep. Upon its release, the record was met with fantastic reviews, with great praise given to its lyrical diversity and melodic folk sound.
Never a band to rest on their laurels, The Frisky Gypsys (Hamilton, Robert Kirkpatrick, David Christy Jones and Mark Derham) are already back to work. Their brand new single ‘Ocean’ sees the band picking up right where they left off.
The track commences with a tense opening guitar lick. Mysterious and strangely hypnotic, just like the ocean, it sets the scene for the ponderous words that follow. Hamilton is in full introspective mode here, laying all his cards on the table. The vocal ripples with raw honesty, and as the beat solidifies so does the resolve in Steven’s Voice.
The build-up of the pre-chorus launches magnificently into a glowingly cathartic chorus. The refrain sways and glistens with aquatic melody, and is imbued with reassuring warmth. It’s as if the dark clouds part, and we are left to bask in the glorious sunlight. As well as being an obviously intimate composition, the track is utterly infectious and has all the trappings of a crossover hit.
The musicianship is, of course, flawless. The aforementioned guitar motif is a strong musical hook and the chorus is beautifully rendered. The highlight of the song for me is the absolutely gorgeous guitar. Dripping with reverb and lovingly performed, it plays up the oceanic theme magnificently and ties the whole track together. Gavin Glass of Orphan recording studio has done a marvellous job with the production, combining with the band to fashion a track that really resonates.
The world has turned a time or two since The Frisky Gypsys last harnesses their joint 30 years of experience to thrill a crowd of eager onlookers. The quality of work displayed with the ‘Dream Big Ep’, and now this smashing new single, suggests that this is a band who are primed to take the scene by storm.
