PureGrand – Pictures
Dublins Prince of Pop returns with picture perfect new single.
PureGrand has the knack of being able to take the mundane and transform it into the most interesting thing in the world. Take for example his previous single ‘Such A Fright’, a riotous ode to zoom-meeting monotony and head-wrecking micromanagers. It’s smart, fun, self-deprecating, and culturally à la mode and further proof that there is something very special about PureGrand. This young singer is most definitely a lyrical talent. He is also an artist who can match that deft wordsmanship with musical savvy and visual acuity.
Now this self-made “Part Time Pop Star” returns with his highly anticipated new single.
On first impression, ‘Pictures’ is a song that is bristling with transformative energy. Summer is on the way, and with it, a reprieve from the doom and gloom we have all had to endure over the winter. We all need a good summer bop this year and ‘Pictures’ most definitely fits the bill, with an instrumental that’s uptempo, breezy, and bubbly. So, with that delightful backdrop in place, Dublin’s very own electro-wunderkind gets to work applying some of that razor-sharp satire for which he is known.
With ‘Pictures’, PureGrand turns his attention to contemporary dating and attraction as he constructs an earnest 90s love song with a modern twist.
“The rules have changed,” says PureGrand, aka Luke Faulkner “they’re not as clear, so the song is poking fun at the complexities of modern dating. Often we are infatuated by people, but also keep them at arm’s length. In a way, the song is quite sincere, but there’s also tongue-in-cheek sarcasm as well.”
There is something so charming about this bubbly electro-pop jaunt. The track is replete with the characteristics of retro 90’s pop, and is a great soundtrack for the adventures of our lovelorn protagonist, stumbling from one dating disaster to another, imbued with wide-eyed optimism. There is self-doubt, neurotic infatuation, and lust aplenty, but also an unfaltering belief in love.
The song was recorded and produced by PureGrand and represents a significant leap forward in his development once again. With each release, his production becomes more and more assured, as does the confidence with which he deliveries these intriguing little stories that are winning over the hearts of the nation.
Faulkner’s list of accolades is also becoming more and more impressive.
Most recently PureGrand was selected by Nialler9’s Best New Acts 2020 as well as Hot Press’s Hot for 2021.
PureGrand may have started out as a bedroom DIY endeavor, but in a relatively short space of time, he has ascended through the ranks to gain a reputation as a fantastic live performer. Lighting up the stages of Ireland’s best homegrown alternative nights including Glitterhole, Avoca’s Queer Cabaret, and Dublin Fringe Festival. He most recently performed with Jack Rua, CMAT, and Gold Blooded Woman as part of Gotta Tell You, a pop event about the future of Irish pop as part of Music Town Dublin.
PureGrand is the very definition of an Independent artist. Starting out as a self-professed pop music freak, working diligently to lean the trade, working even harder to get himself known, and staying true to his vision of fun-loving pop perfection.
