Lucy May – Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me
London based country-rose shines on beautiful acoustic track.
Lucy-May is the child of another time. From the clothes on her back to the songs in her heart, this London based chanteuse harkens back to the soulful days of Motown, platform heels, and singers who really sang out with passion and conviction. Her R&B tinged country sound has struck a chord with both fans and critics alike, and early on in her career, she was tipped as a home-grown star by entertainment legend (and country music aficionado) Sir Terry Wogan.
Working with the noted songwriter Jeff Cohen, Lucy May went about making her debut LP ‘Whirlwind’ in the home of country music Nashville Tennessee. Lucy worked two jobs in order to bring together the funds to record the album, and you can hear that same steely determination in everything Lucy-May does. She has self-belief and conviction on her side, driving her towards success.
Since then Lucy May has enjoyed a ‘whirlwind’ career, Opening for greats like Micheal Bolton, Gabrielle, and Kristian Bush, and touring all over the US. Her second album ‘Little By Little’ earned radio play from Graham Norton and Paul O’ Grady, and saw this in-demand artist thrill revellers with her very own headline show in the UK.
Now Lucy-May gives us a preview of her upcoming album with the beautiful acoustic song ‘Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me’.
The song opens with Lucy-May in a reflective mood. Against some beautifully understated guitar playing, she looks back on life’s ups and downs and comes to the conclusion that her chosen companion is responsible for a lot of the happiness in her life. Themes of love and gratitude have always been a staple of country songs, and Lucy-May gathers the sincerity in her voice to communicate these feelings authentically.
As the track intensifies, Lucy-May shows off some wonderful technique and control over her voice. She is an old school emotive singer who has learned her trade by singing out and putting real feeling behind a song. There is no auto-tune here, no studio magic to sweeten the broth, this is simply a woman putting her all into a passionate song in a timeless manner.
Effortlessly stylish and with a truly golden voice, this fantastic artist is blessed with an infectious likability that comes naturally to her. Certain singers can unite fans of all genres in appreciation of a song well sung, and Lucy-May most definitely fits that bill. ‘The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me’ is a lovely modern country song that will most definitely propel the career of this London rose to even greater heights.
