Dublin singer-songwriter Amy Ellen in an indie-folk artist who draws inspiration from American and Australian folk artists like Angie McMahon, Kurt Vile and Fleetwood Mac.
Since her 2019 debut single ‘My Heart’, Amy has been racking up plaudits from industry stalwarts such as Golden Plec and David Dee Moore, as well as her fair share of radio play.
Now, Amy looks to push on into 2021 with the release of her brand new single ‘This Life’.
‘This Life’ commences with a chugging guitar progression which opens up into a verse that would not feel out of place on one of Sheryl Crow’s early albums. Amy’s vocal style is relaxed and breezy, yet inquisitive and tinged with wry wisdom as she recalls a decaying relationship. The song marks a subtle departure from the rest of her back catalogue as Amy flirts with 90s pop-rock and even maybe some Hole style grunge tones. Throughout all this though, she remains true to the folk-based sound that has seen her turn heads with songs like ‘In The Dark’ and ‘It’s Time’.
The autobiographical lyrics tell the story of a young woman learning to be a little less naive and as her confidence grows, so to does the confidence and swagger in the song. There is, however, a sombre undertone at play here which perhaps illustrates a loss of innocence. Amy herself states the song confronts the inevitable, sobering moment when one realises that nothing lasts forever. Obscured by the breezy pop bluster is a hint of regret, and for that reason, the song feels like a cleansing exhale. Resolving to dust herself off and go again.
It’s a fun, affirmative song that takes on a universal theme in a delicate way but still finds time to be rebellious and attitudinal, all the hallmarks of a coming-of-age classic. Amy Ellen distinguishes herself here with an astute performance, loosening up to match the punchy sound of the instrumental.
With this single Amy Ellen has expanded upon her already glowing reputation and will surely gain even more attention from the listening public. She is an artist who has long since come of age and is now charging forward on her own terms.
‘This Life’ is out on February 19th, to celebrate the release, Amy will perform an exclusive live stream show on Saturday 20th February (8 pm) in partnership with California based company High Plateau Productions. Tickets are on sale now via Eventbrite.
